Being a wedding photographer has many perks. One of them is that, although I am currently based out of London, Ontario, my location from weekend to weekend has the ability to change. This past September I had the pleasure of being hired to photograph Steph & Derrick’s destination wedding in the Mayan Riviera. In my previous life as a touring musician, second to creating and playing music live was traveling and meeting new people. This is something that now, being a photographer, I am able to indulge in regularly.

As soon as I met the crew of forty that were traveling to Mexico, I knew that we would become fast friends. Once we arrived at the resort, our first priority was getting acclimated (the resort is huge!). This was not exclusively for navigational purposes of course; getting an immediate idea of what the Occidental Grand Xcaret had to offer in terms of shooting locations post-ceremony was top priority. I noticed quickly that, although I had researched the resort prior to leaving, there were many, many alternative photographic opportunities. The wedding day sailed by at the pace only a wedding day can and, as expected, it was beautiful. The ceremony was held on the coast next to one of the many Mayan ruins and, opposite to the ruin sat the ocean. The light and weather were perfect (for the first time since we had arrived, I might mention), leaving dusk for the wedding photographs (ideal!). The formal reception was held after returning at one of Waterloo’s finest reception halls: St. George Hall. If you haven’t been there and are planning on having or, know someone who is planning a reception, check out the link below if you’re interested in a versatile and contemporary reception venue.

Below are one collection of photographs out of the hundreds of finals. If you’re into them, take a second to look through my galleries on my website (MY SITE); the galleries contain many more photographs from their wedding.

I want to take this chance to again thank Steph and Derrick, as well as both families for being supportive, collaborative and encouraging throughout their wedding adventure (bird shot!) . I can’t wait to see you guys again soon!
